The Northshire Bookstore is a success story for independent bookstores and has been recognized nationally as such. The owners, after carefully surveying their customer base, determined that they needed to expand their business to remain competitive and maintain that success. The project posed many significant challenges for the design team. The surveys showed that customers loved the funky nooks and crannies of the existing store but also found it to be too crowded. There were already accessibility issues and to meet the space requirements for the addition the store would go from a single level space to a five level space. BMA worked closely with the owners and developed a solution that met the desires of their customers and their economic needs. With over 18,000 square feet of new space and 12,000 square feet of renovated space the store now includes expanded and new departments, along with a new 65 seat café that blends in with store.
